Qualified Service Pilot Instrument Rating

Course Description
The Qualified Service Pilot conversion course is available at two separate levels dependant on the type of military rating held.

Course Detail

  • Military pilots holding or having held a Non-Procedural rating

A military pilot holding a non-procedural instrument rating is required to complete a minimum 15 hour Single Pilot instrument rating course. In addition to the flying elements, the course involves a Ground School package with a detailed section on exercises and procedures not generally flown on a military non-procedural rating. These include:
  • ILS Procedures

  • ADF/NDB theory and procedures

  • Holding Patterns

  • Hold joining procedures

  • UK CAA IFR regulations

  • Wind / Time / Drift calculations

The flying element consists of a minimum of 10 hours instruction in an AS350/355 FNTP II flight simulator plus 5 hours flying in an IFR AS355.
  • Military pilots holding or having held a Procedural rating
The course for pilots at this level is "Training as required" and is tailored to the individual student's experience and ability. Typically the course will consist of 2 or 3 flight simulator instructional sessions and 3 to 5 hours flying.

Course Duration
The Non-procedural rating course typically requires 2 to 3 weeks depending on a student's progress. Procedural ratings require 1 to 2 weeks dependant on progress.
